Restoring District Accountability

Every politician makes promises to get elected — and most of those promises are forgotten the day after the election. MOGA doesn't let them be. To build our promise record, we draw on the Ballotpedia website, a non-partisan encyclopedia that documents the campaign themes and commitments candidates made while running for office, alongside the official websites of the legislators themselves. Each promise we collect is archived in its original wording, with its source noted, so nothing is paraphrased out of shape.

We then compare those promises to what the legislator actually does in Congress: the bills they introduce, and the way they vote on the bills that come before the House and Senate. Where a single, clearly relevant bill decides a promise — for example, a pledge to protect health coverage and a vote on a health coverage bill — we record whether the legislator's action Kept or Contradicted that promise. Promises that no single vote settles are left unrated rather than guessed at, so the record stays honest.

The result is a plain, source-backed scorecard you can read before the next election: did your senator or representative keep the promises that won your vote? Instead of relying on campaign ads, partisan spin, or memory, you can see the promises as they were made and the votes as they were cast — side by side. That is what turns an informed decision on Election Day into an accountable one.

Every member of Congress must publicly report who gives them money, and MOGA brings those filings to you. We pull each legislator's campaign finance record directly from the Federal Election Commission — the same official filings candidates are required by law to make — and organize it on their profile: the total raised for their campaign, and the individuals, PACs, and organizations behind the contributions.

Why does this matter? A representative's duty is to their constituents. When a large share of a campaign's money comes from a particular industry, a political action committee, or donors outside the district, it is fair to ask whether their votes serve the people who elected them or the people who funded them. Campaign funding doesn't prove an allegiance — but it is one of the clearest public signals of who a legislator is connected to, and comparing it against their promises and their votes can reveal patterns worth a second look.
